INTRODUCTION ABOUT FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION

FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION contains Artesunate which belongs to the group of medicines called Antimalarials. It is used for the treatment of severe malaria including cerebral malaria in adult and paediatric patients. Also, it can also be used against quinine resistance.

Malaria is mosquito-borne acute febrile disease caused by a protozoan named Plasmodium falciparum. It is characterized by symptoms such as high fever, chills, sweating, headache, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, body aches, weakness, agitation, confusion, fainting on standing up and anaemia (reduced red blood cell count). Cerebral malaria is the most severe neurological complication of Plasmodium falciparum malaria which may also cause coma.

FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION is not recommended for use if you have previous history of allergic reactions to artesunate or artemisinin derivatives. Before receiving FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION inform your doctor if you liver or kidney problems or any other problems.

FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION is not recommended for use during first trimester of pregnancy. It should be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor before receiving FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION.

FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION should be used with caution in children. Consult your child’s doctor for advice before administration of FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION to your child.

The most common side effects associated with the use of FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION are dizziness, light-headedness, headache, rash, hair loss, taste alteration (metallic/bitter taste), nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Inform your doctor if any of these side effects bothers you.

USES OF FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION

  • Treats severe malaria including cerebral malaria

HOW FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION WORKS

FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION helps in treating malaria where Artesunate works by transforming into a metabolite and binds with iron component of blood and forms free radicals which inhibit the synthesis of protein and nucleic acid in Plasmodium parasites and prevents it from invading red blood cells, thus treating the malaria effectively.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION will be given to you only by a doctor or a nurse intravenously (into the vein) or intramuscularly (into the muscle). Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

SIDE EFFECTS OF FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION

COMMON

  • dizziness, light-headedness
  • tinnitus (with or without reduced hearing capability)
  • headache, insomnia
  • rash
  • hair loss
  • taste alteration (metallic/ bitter taste)
  • nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite and diarrhoea
  • cough or nasal symptoms
  • joint pain, muscle disorders
  • fatigue, malaise, fever
  • pain at injection site

UNCOMMON

  • rhythm and conduction disorders
  • hypersensitivity

RARE

  • arterial ischemia, hypertensive retinopathy
  • inflammation of pancreas
  • hepatitis, calculous cholecystitis

Stop receiving FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION and inform your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • severe allergic reactions such as urticaria or generalized rash, shortness of breath, low blood pressure

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea or vomiting:

Stick to simple meals while receiving this medicine. Avoid eating oily, fried or spicy foods. Do not lie down or sleep immediately after eating. If the symptom does not improve, inform your doctor.

Stomach pain:

Take rest to relax yourself. Try to have smaller and frequent meals. Keep a heat pad on your stomach. In case of no improvement, inform your doctor.

Diarrhoea:

Drink lot of fluids such as water or fruit juices to keep yourself hydrated. Inform your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

Headache:

Rest and relax. Consume plenty of fluids such as water and electrolytes. Apply a pain-relieving balm on the forehead if necessary. Inform your doctor if the symptom worsens.

Skin rash:

Avoid hot showers because hot water can irritate the skin. Do not scratch the affected area. Use moisturizers to relax and hydrate the affected skin area. Inform your doctor if the symptom worsens.

PREGNANCY

FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION is not recommended for use during first trimester of pregnancy. Consult your doctor before receiving FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION.

BREASTFEEDING

FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION should be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor before receiving FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION.

KIDNEY

No dose adjustment is needed for patients with kidney impairment. Consult your doctor before receiving FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION.

LIVER

No dose adjustment is needed for patients with liver impairment. Consult your doctor before receiving FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION.

ALLERGY

Do not receive FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION if you are allergic to artesunate or artemisinin derivatives or any other ingredients of this medicine.

OTHERS

Use in Paediatrics

FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION should be used with caution in children. Consult your child’s doctor for advice before administration of FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION to your child.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug Interactions

Before receiving FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION, inform your doctor, if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • nevirapine or ritonavir (medicines used to treat HIV infection)
  • rifampin (used to treat tuberculosis)
  • carbamazepine, phenytoin (medicines used to treat fits)
  • axitinib, vandetanib, imatinib (medicines used to treat cancer)
  • diclofenac (used to treat pain)

Overdosage:

FALCIGO 120MG INJECTION will be given to you only by a doctor or nurse in a hospital, and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. In case of overdose you may experience seizures, dark stools, low levels of blood cells and multiorgan failure.
