INTRODUCTION

ALKASTON ORAL SOLUTION is a combination of Potassium citrate and Magnesium citrate which belongs to the group of medicines called Urinary alkalizers and Saline laxatives respectively. It is used in the treatment of renal tubular acidosis with calcium stones and kidney stones (hypocitraturic calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis and uric acid lithiasis with or without calcium stones).

Renal tubular acidosis is a condition in which the kidneys do not remove acids from the blood into the urine as they usually should. Before taking ALKASTON ORAL SOLUTION, your doctor might want you to take certain blood tests and ECG to understand your existing condition.

ALKASTON ORAL SOLUTION is not recommended for use in patients with hyperkalemia (high potassium levels in the blood), gastrointestinal disease, peptic ulcer disease, urinary tract infection and kidney disease.

ALKASTON ORAL SOLUTION is not recommended for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women unless it is clearly advised by the doctor. Safety and effectiveness of ALKASTON ORAL SOLUTION in children has not been established yet. The most common side effects of taking ALKASTON ORAL SOLUTION are abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

USES OF ALKASTON ORAL SOLUTION

Treats,

  • renal tubular acidosis (RTA) with calcium stones
  • hypocitraturic calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis
  • uric acid lithiasis (with or without calcium stones)

HOW ALKASTON ORAL SOLUTION WORKS

ALKASTON ORAL SOLUTION works by reducing the kidney stone formation. Potassium citrate and magnesium citrate, causes the metabolism of absorbed citrate producing an alkaline load. In addition to raising urinary pH and citrate, this also increases urinary potassium and magnesium. In certain patients, potassium citrate causes a transient reduction in urinary calcium. These changes produce urine that is less helpful to the crystallization of stone-forming salts.
