METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET contains Methimazole which belongs to the group of medicines called Antithyroid Agents. It is used to manage overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) in adults. It is also used to prepare for thyroidectomy (removal of the thyroid gland).

METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET is not recommended if you have history of acute pancreatitis (severe abdominal pain). METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients suffering from liver, kidney disease, large goitre (swelling in the front neck). Consult your doctor before taking it. METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women unless it is considered clearly necessary. METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine.

METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET is not recommended for use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine. The most common side effects of taking METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET are anorexia (eating disorder), muscle pain, dizziness, drowsiness, neuritis, edema, numbness hair loss and heartburn. Contact your doctor if any of the above side effects worsen or persists for a longer duration.

USES OF METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET

METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET is used to:

  • manage hyperthyroidism
  • prepare for thyroidectomy or for radioactive iodine treatment

HOW METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET WORKS

METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET helps to inhibit the synthesis of thyroid hormones and thus is effective in the management of hyperthyroidism.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Take METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET as advised by your doctor. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

SIDE EFFECTS OF METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET

COMMON

  • anorexia (an eating disorder)
  • muscle pain
  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • neuritis (inflammation of a nerve, often with pain or tenderness)
  • edema (swelling due to fluid build-up)
  • numbness
  • hair loss
  • heart burn
  • hives
  • skin pigmentation
  • loss of taste
  • vertigo (reeling sensation)

RARE

  • fever (greater than 40.5°C)
  • nephritis (inflammation of the kidney), decreased appetite, difficulty breathing, fatigue, frequent urination, itchiness, nausea, vomiting

Stop taking METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET and consult with your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • symptoms of antithyroid arthritis syndrome such as pain those spreads from one joint to another
  • symptoms of vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessel) including rash, hematuria (blood in urine) or decreased urine output, shortness of breath or hemoptysis (coughing up blood)
  • symptoms of agranulocytosis (decrease in white blood cell count) such as frequent infection with fever, chills, sore throat
  • symptoms of liver dysfunction such as jaundice (yellowish discolouration of skin and whites of the eye), loss of appetite, itching and/or pain at right upper-quadrant of stomach
  • signs and symptoms of acute pancreatitis such as severe stomach pain radiating to back, rapid heartbeat, fever, nausea and vomiting
  • signs of exfoliative dermatitis such as redness or peeling of the skin over large areas of your body

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Dizziness Or Drowsiness

Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operating any tools or machines while you are feeling dizzy. Consult your doctor if your dizziness did not improve.

Nausea And Vomiting

Take METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET, with or just after a meal. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy food. Contact your doctor if your nausea and vomiting did not improve.

PREGNANCY

METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women unless it is considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine.

BREASTFEEDING
Contraindicated

METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET is not recommended for use in breast feeding women as this medicine passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine.

KIDNEY
Use with Caution

METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients suffering from kidney disease and may require dosage adjustment. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

LIVER
Use with Caution

METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients suffering from liver disease and may require dose adjustment. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

ALLERGY
Contraindicated

Do not take METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET if you are allergic to Methimazole or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

USE IN PEDIATRICS
Contraindicated

METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET is not recommended for use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

OTHERS

METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET is not recommended for you, if you:

  • have history of acute pancreatitis
  • have hereditary problems such as galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption

Before taking METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you:

  • have a low white blood cell count
  • have joint pain
  • have skin problems
  • have a large goitre (swelling in the front neck)
  • are going to have surgery

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Before taking METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

  • digitalis glycosides Ex. digoxin, digitoxin (medicines used for heart failure)
  • theophylline (used for asthma)
  • anticoagulants Ex. warfarin (medicines used to thin blood)
  • beta blockers such as atenolol, carvedilol, labetalol (medicines used to manage high blood pressure and heart diseases)

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally takes too much of METHIMEZ 5MG TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, headache, fever, joint pain, itching and edema (fluid retention or swelling).
