BIMAT contains Bimatoprost which belongs to the group of medicines called Anti-glaucoma preparations. It is used to treat glaucoma. Glaucoma is group of eye condition that damages the optic nerve (nerves which are responsible for proper vision). It is characterized by increased pressure within the eyes. It is caused due to impaired secretion or drainage of fluids (aqueous humour) within the eyes.
Bimatoprost improves the drainage of the accumulated fluids (aqueous humour) from the eye. As a result, it helps in reducing the elevated pressure within the eye. Prior to the treatment, your doctor would take certain eye tests to understand your existing condition.
Before using BIMAT, inform your doctor if you had undergone any surgery in your eyes (such as cataract) as a precaution. You must also inform your doctor if you have infections in your eye or any underlying heart conditions (such as low blood pressure or low heart rate).
During treatment with BIMAT, you may experience certain changes in your eye such as sunken eyes, eyelid drooping, skin tightening around the eyes, sudden growth in eyelashes or darkness around the eyes or in the iris. These side effects are usually temporary and disappears once therapy is stopped.
Consult your doctor before using BIMAT if you are pregnant or breastfeeding as a precaution. BIMAT is usually not prescribed in children and adolescents (below 18 years).
BIMAT effectively reduces pressure within the eyes, where bimatoprost acts by increasing the drainage of the fluids (aqueous humour) accumulated within the eye. This reduces strain on the eyes and therefore reduces the elevated intraocular pressure.
Use BIMAT as advised by your physician. It is for ophthalmic use only. Wash your hands before use. Instil few drops of BIMAT into the affected eye. Close your eyes and press the corner of your eye with your finger for a minute.
Do not touch the tip of the dropper with your eye or other body surface to avoid contamination. Apply applying BIMAT, leave a time gap of at least 5 minutes before applying other eye drops or ointment. If you wear soft contact lenses, remove the lens before applying BIMAT and wait for at least 15 minutes before reinsertion.
Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition. Do not stop using BIMAT without consulting your doctor, as the pressure within the eye may raise once again.
Dry Eye:
Wash your eye with water more frequently. Drink plenty of fluids such as water or juices. If you experience severe eye dryness, consult your doctor for advice. Your doctor may prescribe an eye lubricant.
Eye irritation or itching:
Wash your eyes with plain cold water. Place an ice pack on your eye to ease the irritation. Avoid straining your eyes by looking at mobile phones, laptops, or television. Wear protective eyeglasses while going outdoors.
Before using BIMAT, inform your doctor if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant.
BIMAT is not recommended for use in breast-feeding women as it may pass through the breast milk. Therefore, consult your doctor before using it.
Do not drive or operate any heavy tools or machines if you experience blurred vision or any other visual disturbances after using BIMAT.
BIMAT should be used with caution in patients with kidney diseases. Therefore, consult your doctor before using it.
