INTRODUCTION

IBUGESIC contains Ibuprofen which belongs to the group of medicines called Non- steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is used to treat mild to moderate muscular pain, headache, earache, sore throat, dental pain and backache. This medicine can also be used in minor injuries such as sprains, strains and used to reduce temperature in fever (post-immunisation fever), as well as other symptoms of cold and influenza.

When your body is fighting an injury or infection, it naturally releases chemicals called prostaglandins which lead to fever, swelling and discomfort. IBUGESIC blocks the effect of prostaglandins.

Before taking IBUGESIC tell your doctor if you have liver, kidney or heart disease. Pregnant and breastfeeding should consult the doctor before taking the medicine. The common side effects are dizziness, tiredness, headache, diarrhea, constipation and flatulence. Avoid excessive use of painkillers, tell your doctor if you are already taking another painkiller before taking this medicine.

USES OF IBUGESIC

HOW IBUGESIC WORKS

IBUGESIC belongs to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID’s) which works by reducing hormones that cause pain and swelling in the body.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Always take IBUGESIC as instructed by your doctor. Shake well before use. Your doctor will give the right dose depending on age, body weight and health condition.

SIDE EFFECTS OF IBUGESIC

COMMON

  • dizziness or tiredness
  • diarrhoea
  • wind (flatulence)
  • constipation
  • headache (do not to take any other medicines for pain to help with this)

UNCOMMON

  • feeling drowsy
  • feeling anxious
  • tingling sensation or pins and needles
  • difficulty sleeping
  • hives
  • skin becomes sensitive to light
  • hearing problems
  • sneezing, blocked, itchy or runny nose
  • stomach or gut ulcer, hole (wall of digestive tract)
  • inflammation of stomach lining
  • ringing in ears (tinnitus)
  • sensation of spinning (vertigo)
  • mouth ulcers

RARE

  • feeling depressed or confused
  • inflammation of the pancreas
  • allergic reaction, including skin rashes, increased sensitivity to light, swelling of the face, tongue, inflammation of the blood vessels, fever or shock, skin and mucous membrane reactions

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

IBUGESIC is not recommended for last 3 months of pregnancy, as it may be harmful to the unborn child. It can be taken on doctor’s advice during the first 6 months of pregnancy. Consult your doctor for advice.

BREASTFEEDING

IBUGESIC should be used with caution during breastfeeding. Consult your doctor for advice.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or handle any machines if you experience dizziness or drowsiness while taking this medicine.

ALCOHOL

Do not consume alcohol while taking IBUGESIC as it may cause dizziness, drowsiness and stomach problems such as bleeding in the stomach.

KIDNEY

IBUGESIC should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Consult your doctor for advice.

LIVER

IBUGESIC should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Consult your doctor for advice.

ALLERGY

Tell your doctor if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Ibuprofen.

HEART DISEASE

IBUGESIC should be used with caution in patients with heart problems including heart failure, angina (chest pain) or had a heart attack, bypass surgery or peripheral artery disease. Consult your doctor for advice.

OTHERS

Do not take this medicine if you have,

  • an allergic reaction, wheezing (after taking aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory painkillers)
  • stomach ulcer or a history of bleeding or perforation (especially after previous NSAID treatment)
  • an inherited intolerance to some sugars

Tell your doctor if you have,

  • high blood pressure
  • diabetes
  • asthma
  • lupus
  • mixed connective tissue disease
  • chronic inflammatory intestinal disease
  • chicken pox
  • infection

Use in pediatrics:

  • IBUGESIC is not recommended for use in children under 3 months. Your doctor will give the right dose depending on your child’s age and body weight.

Use in geriatrics:

  • IBUGESIC should be used with caution in elderly patients (above 65 years of age). Consult your doctor for advice.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug - Drug interactions:

Inform your physician if you are taking,

  • aspirin/acetylsalicyclic acid, warfarin, ticlodipine (used to thin  blood or prevent clotting)
  • captopril, atenolol, losartan (reduces high blood pressure)
  • diuretics
  • digoxin (used to treat heart conditions)
  • lithium (treats mental disorders)
  • zidovudine (treats viral infection)
  • hydrocortisone (treats inflammatory conditions)
  • methotrexate (treat certain cancers and rheumatoid arthritis)
  • ciclosporin and tacrolimus (used to dampen down the immune response)
  • selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (treats depression)
  • ciprofloxacin and aminoglycosides (treats infections)
  • glibenclamide (treats diabetes)
  • mifepristone
  • cholestyramine (used to lower cholesterol)
  • glibenclamide (used to treat diabetes)
  • voriconazole or fluconazole (treats fungal infection)
  • gingko biloba (herbal medicine)

Overdosage:

  • If you accidentally take too much of this medicine, consult your doctor immediately. Symptoms include nausea, stomach pain, vomiting (may be blood streaked), headache, ringing in the ears, confusion and shaky eye movement. At high doses, drowsiness, chest pain, palpitations, loss of consciousness, convulsions (mainly in children), weakness, dizziness, blood in urine, cold body feeling and breathing problems.
